Aisling Burke-Connolly
Well I for one can’t believe LinkedIn has been on the go for over 13 years to date! Wow. I recall it being a very new thing!
It started out didn’t it as a replacement to going to the pub on a Friday night socialising and its aim was to simply bring networking to a unique platform? I’ve noticed more criticism than ever about LinkedIn recently – users slating it as being used as more of a Facebook than a professional networking tool.
There will of course be many arguments on this I am sure, however surely criticising individuals for their choice of shares can only increase such activity through natural rebelling attitudes we or the majority of us have. Surely people have the freedom to use it in whatever way they choose, as a professional consultant I will usually advise others to keep it professional and focus on what it is there for, to build up a network of people to enhance your career opportunities and to arrange face to face meetings with people. We shouldn’t let go of traditional networking as LinkedIn is designed as a platform to assist in arranging meetings. We are all too guilty of steering away from good old fashioned conversation, sometimes we have to look at how many emails we send and could some of these be turned in to nice telephone or face to face conversation?
I am all for the moving forward with technology and identifying opportunities to cut time and increase business however, there is a balance there and we are all in business to a degree because we are passionate about it, that passion can be wasted down an internet cable connection if we let it.
My message is to enjoy your own communication skills and let your professionalism and drive be seen in person too.
