A refreshing and honest account of working in our Lancaster office as a Graduate Trainee Recruitment Consultant at The Eventus Recruitment Group by Erin McKnight…
I’ll be honest, at no point whilst studying at university did I think to myself: ‘I’m going to be a Recruitment Consultant’. I know that I’m not the only person in recruitment who has sort of found themselves in this sort of role, but here I am, almost a year on from starting with The Eventus Recruitment Group, and I can honestly say that I really enjoy my job. Which begs the question: ‘Why go into recruitment as a recent graduate?’.
First and foremost; the money. If you’re good at your job within recruitment, you can quite easily be making a significant amount of money in commission. This is, money on top of your basic salary. Further, if you have been consistently good at your ability to successfully recruit, and your boss notices, it’s not unreasonable to suggest that you will be given a clear and structured progression plan that will likely increase your basic salary.
Progression. I hinted at this in my first point. Depending on the size of team that you work for, your progression plan can quite easily see you to managing and developing your own team. Though The Eventus Recruitment Group is small, I have been given the freedom and the autonomy to come up with a plan to maximise what I can bring to my employer. Siobhan (our MD), and I sit down every month and assess what I have done, and what I have achieved. We also look at areas of weakness, discuss a plan, then begin to put it into action to make sure that I am doing the very best that I can for the area that I look after as a Recruitment Consultant.
Again, linked to my previous point, my third reason for considering Recruitment as a career is because of the autonomy you can be given. I look after the Southeast Home Counties, and I am given then opportunity to take the time to understand how my market works, and then make it work for me. I don’t just follow instructions. I assess what works well and what doesn’t, I feed this back to Siobhan, and then we adjust accordingly.
I hasten to add, the reasons for considering a career in Recruitment that I have put forward so far are very much based on my experience working in a small but successful business. If I were to talk to friends who work for bigger recruitment teams, they would likely say very different things. I know, for example, that there is a real pressure in some Recruitment agencies to hit solid targets. I have this pressure, but I am given the freedom to work out why things aren’t working if I am struggling to do so. That’s what is rare about working for The Eventus Recruitment Group; people want you to be the very best that you can be, and you are allowed to say what you may need to ensure that you can be. I, for one, think that is a pretty good (and quite rare!) environment to work in.
