Spring and the effects on mental health

[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1646733165051{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]As the weather changes it can have a huge effect on mental health which has been publicised over many years as we move from Autumn to Winter. But how does it affect us as we move into Spring and what can we do to maximise the slightly longer days?

Winter can be difficult for people with mental health problems, the cold dark weather can exacerbate depression and anxiety, but as the days get longer with Spring approaching, I read an interesting article recently about ways to enhance the changes in weather to improve one’s wellbeing.

The obvious way is to spend more time outside. Vitamin D is a great way to improve your mood and health. A piece of research which was recently done suggested that a mere 15 minutes outside in the sun can affect your mood massively. Here at the Eventus Recruitment Group we hugely encourage a walk, gym or other lunchtime activities. The productivity is raised so much more in the afternoon, and the team look and are noticeably lifted. It’s much preferable than the “sandwich at the desk” culture.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Another point is to stake stock of your internal environment, i.e. the well-known notion of “spring cleaning.” De-cluttering your home and work life is an excellent way to declutter your mind. I am showing my age by saying how excited I am that a skip is being delivered this weekend for me to do just this. There are local recycling facilities, or you could donate to charity shops or try online selling.

Journaling is an idea that I hadn’t thought of but may do so. A new season is a great time to think about plans and aims to achieve before Summer starts. I think I am going to categorise mine as:

• Well-being

• House

• Garden

• Work

• Fitness

Or maybe I should re-prioritise the above having put the fitness last.

On fitness, Spring is a great time to begin and ham up the fitness regime. Doing a circuit outdoors surrounded by daffodils and crocus is so much better and enticing than forcing yourself to go to the gym after a long day at work in the dark.

So here’s to Spring, here’s to a lighter mind and body and here’s to lambs jumping in the fields…

8 cost-free ways to reduce stress

Juggling commitments in both your professional and personal lives can very easily lead to us dealing with increased levels of stress. In particular, this is amplified in times of change and we’ve seen so much of it recently. Here, the Eventus Recruitment Group shares eight things you can do to reduce stress in your life and they won’t cost you any money.

1. Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about sitting in the here and now and letting everything around, pass you by. You’ll be amazed at how just taking time out for just one single minute can have an impact on your stress levels. Just sit somewhere and rest. Listen to your breathing and simply observe. Take in what you see, without judgment.

There a lots of downloadable apps that can help with mindfulness, including Headspace and Calm.

2. Breathing Techniques

If you’re feeling worn out and tired, a wonderful technique to de-stress is to simply breathe.  If you’re feeling stress, you’re likely to be taking shallow breaths, which deprives your body of oxygen. Take slow, deep, steady breaths. Do this a few times, wherever you are and it will have an impact on your relaxed state.

3. Exercise to reduce stress

It’s simple, exercise helps to release endorphins also known as ‘feel good’ hormones while using up some of the hormones you release while stressed. Get some fresh air or try a home workout in your living room.

4. Practise Meditation

Meditation reduces stress by decreasing hypertension, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It helps you have a restful sleep and supports your body in more efficient oxygen use.

Start by sitting or lying down in a comfortable position and closing your eyes. Try to breathe as naturally as possible, but focus your attention on your breath and how your chest, shoulders, rib cage, and stomach move each time you inhale. Try to maintain this for around 2-3 minutes at first and then build it up to around 10 minutes a day if you feel yourself getting stressed.

5. Get More Sleep

To reduce stress, the National Sleep Foundation suggests to get a good night’s sleep of around 7-9-hours. Their website has lots of sleep tools and tips.

6. Yoga

In the same way as meditation helps to reduce stress, so does yoga. Hatha yoga includes certain postures and breathing practices to transform the mind into a more settled state. There are lots of relaxing poses to help you relax in yoga, for example, the extended child’s pose, where you rest on your knees and hands but lengthen your arms forwards and sink your hips backwards, creating length in your spine. There are lots of free videos on Youtube with yoga routines that you can do at home.

You can read more about yoga at the NHS website.

7. Listen to Music

We’ve all experienced how certain songs can transform us into a completely different mood. Set up some playlists of your favourite music. Slow and quiet classical music has the best effect on reducing stress.

8. Avoid Caffeine

Finally, avoiding caffeine, alcohol and  nicotine will reduce stress levels. If you’re looking to swap an alcoholic nightcap, choose a chamomile tea instead. Chamomile helps calm the mind.

How can employers really help parents progress in their careers?

[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1645703351511{padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]This is a pretty imperative question considering that 75% of mothers and 92% of fathers with dependent children are in work, according to the ONS (2020).  So yes, we really do need to consider how employers can really help parents progress!

First things first I think employers have absolutely got to get their heads around the reality that parenting is an eighteen-year gig that affects men, women, adoptive and biological parents, parents with new-borns and teenagers. I am not just talking about women coming back from maternity leave here.

I am quite old school and I feel progression comes from hard work, commitment and tenacity. However, I know, as a parent myself, that if I am to demonstrate all these qualities then I really need to feel my employer has my back and understands that as desperately important as my job is to me, I am a mum primarily and ultimately that will always come first.  However, that said I passionately feel that with an employer who understands and supports you then parenthood should be no barrier to progression.

So back to the ‘How’ of all of this.  Well, I am a simple soul and as such I feel this shouldn’t be a complicated issue.  How about …

Recognise the parents in your business – simply acknowledge that as a business you are so aware that they have huge responsibilities and commitments outside of their job.

Keep talking to each otherwithout doubt one of the best ways to support your employee is to talk to them directly to find out their needs.  It is all too easy to assume that employees want a certain thing, but everyone is different and family needs are different too. It may be that from listening to your employees you can simply tweak an existing arrangement or find a solution that works for everyone and consequently assists them to demonstrate the already mentioned hard work, commitment and tenacity!

Facilitate flexible work schedules – I am conscious that post pandemic this is hardly a revolutionary headline, but it goes back to the fact that if you can allow parents to work to a pattern that works for them, then you will in turn facilitate the tenacity, hard work … yeah you get the theme I am going with!

You know what I feel so strongly, it’s vital that employers are enabling and empowering their working parents.  After all, as a parent, your ability to manage your time, multitask and prioritise is second to none.  I can honestly say that I am a lot more efficient, constructive, and tenacious now as a parent than I ever was beforehand. Put bluntly, I don’t have time to waste, and I think the majority of working parents would agree.  So let’s keep talking to each other about what we need .. employers and employees.  If we can both will go from strength to strength!

How to make your Finance CV stand out

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]According to UK job search stats 2022 recruiters spend between 6-8 seconds looking at a CV! With the highest increase (185.3%) of jobs posted since the pandemic and 9.8 million employed Brits actively job hunting each day, it’s more important than ever to make your CV stand out.

It has been reported that 98% of large organisations use automated systems to scan CVs, so you want to make sure you have keywords related to the job you are applying for in the body of your CV.

Lets start with the basics![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

How do I start writing my CV?

Let’s face it; writing a CV can be a daunting task. If you need some help, have a look online at examples of CVs. Find a good template to help with what you should be adding and where.

Your CV should only contain information relevant to your potential employer. So that means, what should be in your CV can differ per application. However, the bare minimum of details on your CV should at least include:

• Personal details
Of course, your new employers should be able to contact you for a job interview. Therefore, you always start by mentioning your full name and email address and mobile phone number. Also mention your place of residence and address, as an employer might prefer an employee living nearby. In case a driver’s licence is required for the role, also mention it. In case you have a representative LinkedIn profile or personal website, you can include a link to it in the personal details section.

• Personal statement or CV profile
Most modern CVs include a short introductory paragraph called personal statement or profile. In this paragraph, which is read by most recruiters, you will get the chance to sell yourself in a few sentences; the kind of role you are looking for, your qualities and ambitions.

• Work experience
In an a-chronological order, list your latest work experience. Start with your latest job and continue with the jobs you worked at before. Per job, give a short clear summary of your tasks, responsibilities and skills. Tip: try and list skills and responsibilities most relevant to the role you’re applying for!

• Education
Just like the previous overview of work experience, start with your last study or highest level of education. Also name the school or institution where you studied, the starting date and date of graduation.

• Competencies and skills
All jobs are different of course. However, during your career, you gain competencies and skills which are transferable. These strong personal traits are gained through experience and will help you execute any other job more efficiently.

• Courses and work-related training
Some employers offer courses or training to improve certain skills of their employees. If you have undertaken any and they’ve improved your skills or competencies that are relevant for the job you’re applying for, make sure to include them.

• Activities
You can also gain certain skills and competencies in a non-professional setting. For instance, by doing voluntary work as a coach, trainer or accountant for a club or organisation. If you have done these activities during your study, they are referred to as an extracurricular activity. Make sure to list them including the skills you gained.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Now you have the basics you want to make sure your CV is geared towards what the employer wants to see. For Finance candidates they want to see what programmes you have used; if you’re proficient in Excel, any relevant qualifications and training.

If you follow all my advice above, you will create a CV that will stand out to employers. Remember to keep it concise and 2 pages maximum.

Making sure your CV is looking at its best is just one of the many things we do for our candidates. Get in touch today with Jo and Shelley in our Cheshire office to discuss your CV and our current opportunities!

Staying Positive During Your Job Search

[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1645116718727{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]So you aren’t happy in your current role, or you’re no longer happy working at your current firm or it could be Dave in Accounts just rubs you up the wrong way! Whatever the reason for seeking a new opportunity the key is “Stay Positive”.

That dream job with the fabulous firm is out there. However, it may not land on your lap as soon as you start looking. So I have put together my top tips to stay sane during your job search:[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1645116732492{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]1. Work with a specialist recruitment consultant – Yes I am bound to say that aren’t I but if you think about it, it makes total sense. Why do all the running around yourself? When you are most likely working during the day, you could have someone like me do the initial work on your behalf!

2. Work with a consultant you actually get on with – This is so important and often overlooked. You want someone who has bought into you, understands you and exactly what you are looking for if they are going to represent you. This has to be someone you can trust so that you can talk through any niggles or concerns you have throughout the entire process.

3. Schedule updates – Let’s face it, when you are actively looking for a new position, waiting to hear back from speculative approaches, applications and interviews is quite nerve-wracking. Having scheduled calls to discuss feedback will help you to focus and move on while the consultant does the work. More often than not I get back to my candidates sooner than they are expecting so that’s a little Brucey-Bonus!

4. Focus on what you can control – if you are working with a specialist recruitment consultant they should have asked you about your CV, even discussed any areas that could be improved or expanded upon. Make sure you have everything in there that you want the hiring manager to know BUT keep it concise. They don’t have time for War and Peace and neither do you. To view our best practice for CV writing, click here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]5. Accept that sometimes it is just timing – Seriously timing is everything. The week before you decided you were ready for a new job opportunity there could have been 3 or 4 jobs in your geographic but this week they have all been offered! It happens. However, if you are working with a good recruitment consultant who keeps in touch with you regularly they will be committed to speaking to their clients about you at every opportunity. Try not to worry and accept that things don’t always happen as quickly as we would like.

6. Remain confident – You know that you are good at what you do. Focus on your strengths and work on any weaknesses. Make a list of your accomplishments to remind yourself how effective you are (this will also come in useful when you get an interview)!

7. Maintain your work / life balance – It’s so easy sometimes to get to the end of an exhausting week and feel that you haven’t the energy or inclination to do the things that you enjoy. Sometimes it’s good to totally relax and do nothing but if you regularly miss out on the things you enjoy you’ll get stuck in a rut. No doubt you will start thinking about the reasons you are seeking a new job opportunity and that can bring you down. Stay balanced and be happy. Things will change.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1645179897611{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]It’s a tough time searching for a new role but it is also an exciting time. There are lots of opportunities in the legal sector at present. So it’s a great time to be looking and considering what you are looking for in your next role and law firm.

As always you can get in touch with me at nikki.phillips@eventuslegal.com or on 07530 737 333 for a confidential discussion to hear more about the market, opportunities and how I can help you acquire that dream job!

Shelley’s Journey working as a Recruitment Resourcer

[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1641998344106{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]By Shelley Gilchrist, Recruitment Resourcer for Eventus Finance and Eventus Recruitment Cheshire.

So in September 2021, after being out of a working environment for nearly 3 years, I started working for Eventus Recruitment Cheshire as a Recruitment Resourcer.

Unfortunately on my 3 year hiatus I wasn’t travelling around the world having great adventures, going on safari or swimming with sharks …  I was raising my Son and Daughter. It was an adventure, some days you feel like you’d rather be swimming with sharks!

Before kids I worked as a Recruitment Consultant for 10 years, recruiting medical professionals for the MoD. When I returned to work I knew I wanted to be part time so I could still be there for the kids at least 2 days a week. Luckily I found Eventus Recruitment Cheshire and they were happy to accommodate working 3 days as a Recruitment Resourcer. It feels good to still be in a recruitment environment, something I was familiar with and feel like I am still able to use all the knowledge I have gained over the years.

My new role coincided with the opening of a new office in Wilmslow, Cheshire. I’m enjoying starting something from the beginning and being part of its story and success. Working alongside my colleague Jo Hood, Recruitment Consultant, over the first 6 months we have made a great team and are going from strength-to-strength. I feel very lucky that we are starting this new venture together and truly believe we can make it a success (it also helps that we like each other and enjoy each other’s boring stories).

Working as a Recruitment Resourcer, it’s pretty much what it says on the tin. I’m recruiting and sourcing candidates from job boards, social media and through our extensive database. It has allowed me to still make an impact and feel like I’m working towards a goal. I would definitely recommend this career route for any consultants out there. It doesn’t feel like a step back but a great opportunity to dip my toe back into recruitment. It’s also a fantastic route for someone wanting to start a career in recruitment and to gain all the skills and knowledge required to be successful in this industry.

To work as a Recruitment Resourcer you need to enjoy building rapport with candidates, be methodical and organised, and have good written and communication skills.

Overall, I’m pleased that I have found a great company that offers flexibility with the development to go further once I feel in a position to do so. I would 100% recommend recruitment to anyone who would like a rewarding career.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1641998440493{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_separator color=”custom” accent_color=”#b6c3dc”][vc_column_text]

Working in Recruitment Marketing – the most challenging and rewarding sector

[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1643901251184{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Working in recruitment marketing – the most challenging and rewarding sector

Since my career started in marketing and communications I’ve worked in many sectors, including property, sport, education and now recruitment. I can honestly say that my first 3 months working in recruitment have been the most rewarding and the challenge I needed after 4 years in my previous role. Here is what I’ve learnt so far…

The recruitment industry is under the radar – The ironic thing is that although school career education and careers fairs are ultimately a recruitment exercise for different sectors, recruitment is a sector that is often missed from these activities and not considered as a universal career option.

I would absolutely recommend using a recruiter – having never used a recruiter before to find work, having now seen first-hand what the Recruitment Consultants do here at The Eventus Recruitment Group, I would 100% use a recruiter in future. They are ethical in everything they do and genuinely care about their candidates and clients. They always get the candidates written permission before they contact companies on their behalf. Seeing how excited the consultants get when a candidate gets an offer is a real buzz; knowing that they have made a positive impact to someone’s career is what makes recruitment a truly amazing job. Not only does their work make a difference to people’s professional lives, but quite often it also improves their personal lives. Sometimes that job offer is what allows someone to relocate closer to their friends and family.

We ourselves have to be at the forefront of change – Since 2020 many of us have come to realise the importance of a healthy work-life balance and flexible working. As a result, our recruitment consultants are spending more time negotiating enhanced contracts for our candidates. In order for them to do it to the best of their ability, our Directors at The Eventus Recruitment Group believe that the consultants need to experience the same benefits.

From a marketing perspective there is so much to consider – in recruitment there isn’t just one customer. There’s clients and candidates, both of whom have completely separate requirements and need a different approach. In 2022 having an online presence is going to be important. As well as ensuring that our adverts stand out and that our branding is relevant and consistent across all channels.

A Day in the Life of a Recruitment Consultant

[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1641998344106{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

A Day In The Life Of A Recruitment Consultant

By Jo Hood, Principal Consultant for Eventus Finance and Head of Eventus Recruitment Cheshire.

Before I joined the wonderful Eventus Recruitment Group I worked within rec2rec for many years.  For those of you not familiar with that industry it is basically the recruitment of recruitment consultants (yes I had many puzzled faces looking back at me when I told people that’s what I did for a living)! So in my rec2rec days I would often need to try and paint a picture of a ‘A Day in the Life of a Recruitment Consultant’.  Truth is some days it would look like Picasso himself had painted it and other days it would look like a toddlers attempt … what I  am trying to say is there are great days in recruitment and there are blinking tough days in recruitment (guess that could be true of all though jobs though).

However, the thread that runs through every day is the variety that there is within any given day.  A day in recruitment can be frustrating, exasperating, wonderful, delirious … but it will never be boring!

There are numerous conversations with candidates, getting to the bottom of what they are really looking for in their next role, getting a real handle on what is going to make them happy and fulfilled moving forward. On the flip side there are numerous conversations with clients getting to the bottom of what their next candidate is going to need to give them to make them happy and fulfilled.  And then the simple (or supposedly simple) task of matching the two.  Interviews to arrange, candidates and clients to prepare ahead of interviews, feedback to take, offers to present …. And so on and so on ….[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1641998364665{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]I haven’t yet mentioned the fact that before all of the above can happen we have got to have sourced said clients and candidates and then write adverts, prepare CVs, map markets …. And so on and so on ….

So, I guess in conclusion ‘A Day in the Life of a Recruitment Consultant’ is busy! (or at least it should be if you are doing it well) It’s also rewarding, at times exhilarating , good fun and at the end of the day it feels like a job well done![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”4401″ img_size=”large”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1641998440493{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_separator color=”custom” accent_color=”#b6c3dc”][vc_column_text]

Flexible working In Recruitment

[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1641998344106{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Flexible Working In Recruitment

By Nikki Phillips, Legal Recruitment Consultant for Lancashire, Cumbria and Manchester

Flexibility in the workplace is definitely on the rise and is now more of an expectation with terms such as “agile working” and “remote” appearing in job adverts across many sectors since the start of the pandemic.

Here at Eventus Recruitment Group we have always had remote and agile working. It is something that works for us as employees but also supports us in our line of work. Flexibility works both ways and I think that’s what works for us here.

I am a single mother of one pre-teen boy. As such, sometimes there are appointments and school functions that I need to attend and I know I have the flexibility in my role to do so. I also work slightly different hours to most of my colleagues, starting at 8.30am (once I have ushered the boy out of the door to the bus stop) and finish at 4.30pm so that I am home for him when he arrives back from school. This works well for us and my clients and candidates know that they can speak to me on my mobile when I am not in the office.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1641998364665{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]When it comes to legal recruitment it really isn’t the 9-5 grind. Quite often it is difficult to speak to candidates during working hours. With court hearings and client meetings many of my candidates prefer to speak to me before or after work, when they can have a more open conversation and aren’t in a hurry for their next meeting. I love the fact that my job isn’t the general 9-5. If I have been on the phone until 7pm of an evening I know I have some extra time to myself later in the week… either starting later, finishing earlier or taking a longer lunch.

I also have the flexibility to work remotely when I need to. We have the necessary technology to enable us to do so, with some of our team working from home permanently, it really isn’t a big deal. Personally, I like to be in the office with the team but from time to time I take advantage of the remote working when I need to.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”4401″ img_size=”large”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1641998440493{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]We’re finding more and more that candidates are seeking more flexibility in the work place. Also many law firms are more open to flexible and remote working, having seen the productivity of employees who have been working from home or managing their time differently due to the pandemic.

As they say every cloud has a silver lining![/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”custom” accent_color=”#b6c3dc”][vc_column_text]

Recruitment as a Graduate Career

[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1641465362854{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

A refreshing and honest account of working in our Lancaster office as a Graduate Trainee Recruitment Consultant at The Eventus Recruitment Group by Erin McKnight…

I’ll be honest, at no point whilst studying at university did I think to myself: ‘I’m going to be a Recruitment Consultant’. I know that I’m not the only person in recruitment who has sort of found themselves in this sort of role, but here I am, almost a year on from starting with The Eventus Recruitment Group, and I can honestly say that I really enjoy my job. Which begs the question: ‘Why go into recruitment as a recent graduate?’.

First and foremost; the money. If you’re good at your job within recruitment, you can quite easily be making a significant amount of money in commission. This is, money on top of your basic salary. Further, if you have been consistently good at your ability to successfully recruit, and your boss notices, it’s not unreasonable to suggest that you will be given a clear and structured progression plan that will likely increase your basic salary.

Progression. I hinted at this in my first point. Depending on the size of team that you work for, your progression plan can quite easily see you to managing and developing your own team. Though The Eventus Recruitment Group is small, I have been given the freedom and the autonomy to come up with a plan to maximise what I can bring to my employer. Siobhan (our MD), and I sit down every month and assess what I have done, and what I have achieved. We also look at areas of weakness, discuss a plan, then begin to put it into action to make sure that I am doing the very best that I can for the area that I look after as a Recruitment Consultant.

Again, linked to my previous point, my third reason for considering Recruitment as a career is because of the autonomy you can be given. I look after the Southeast Home Counties, and I am given then opportunity to take the time to understand how my market works, and then make it work for me. I don’t just follow instructions. I assess what works well and what doesn’t, I feed this back to Siobhan, and then we adjust accordingly.

I hasten to add, the reasons for considering a career in Recruitment that I have put forward so far are very much based on my experience working in a small but successful business. If I were to talk to friends who work for bigger recruitment teams, they would likely say very different things. I know, for example, that there is a real pressure in some Recruitment agencies to hit solid targets. I have this pressure, but I am given the freedom to work out why things aren’t working if I am struggling to do so. That’s what is rare about working for The Eventus Recruitment Group; people want you to be the very best that you can be, and you are allowed to say what you may need to ensure that you can be. I, for one, think that is a pretty good (and quite rare!) environment to work in.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”custom” accent_color=”#ff8200″][vc_column_text]

When I had an interview, she arranged a Zoom meeting between us and guided me through the upcoming interview, which was most helpful. Needless to say, I got the job!!” – Norrie, successful legal candidate.

How to decide between multiple job offers

How to decide between multiple job offers

If you are searching for a job right now in a market where there are so many job vacancies, there is a real possibility that you could end up receiving more than one job offer. This may sound fantastic, however, for anyone who’s been in this position knowing what to do and which job offer to choose is a real challenge.

Being in this situation can be overwhelming and the stakes can seem quite high, as your work has a huge impact on your quality of life. So how do you manage this process and come to a decision? How do you keep one company at bay while you explore your other offer / offers?

Make sure you have a written offer before you do anything

Verbal offers are not offers, you need to get them in writing. If you don’t have this, this could work in your favour by buying you some time. Simply go back to your recruiter or HR professional who presented you with the verbal offer with something along the lines of, “The job sounds like a fantastic opportunity. I’m keen to sit down and review all of the details. When should I expect to receive the written offer?”

Write a pros and cons list

If you are unsure on which job offer to accept, write down the pros and cons of all your offers. Doing this can be very powerful. By comparing your job offers in this way helps you to clearly identify which offer is the standout offer. Your list should include some specific aspects of the job, such as:

Working hours / schedule

Salary

Paid time off / number of holiday days

Flexibility

Commute time / cost

Location

Health insurance and other benefits

Company culture

Opportunities for growth

Job security

Be honest and ask for a bit more time

Unless you think that the companies who want to hire you will respond negatively, we recommend being honest with the recruiter or HR person about your situation. Along as you don’t try your luck by asking for additional weeks to reflect, there is no harm in asking for an additional couple of days to make your final decision. Always provide a deadline as to when the company can expect to receive your decision. We generally find that companies are supportive when we tell them that a candidate wants some additional time to choose which job offer is right for them.

Research the Workplace

As you are reviewing your job offers, conduct some extra research on the companies. Seek out information such as the companies’ reputation within their industry and with their employees to get an idea of what it is like working there. Review any press, as well as the companies’ social media to get an idea of the company culture. If you used recruiters, speak to them to find out what they know about the company they are working with.

Reflect on the Interviews and Hiring Processes

One way to determine whether you would like working for each company is to think about how you were treated throughout the hiring process. Employers often treat people in the interviews how they treat their employees in the workplace. Did they communicate clearly with you and keep you updated throughout the hiring process? Were there any slight niggles or red flags?

Be polite and wrap it up with a thank you

Unfortunately, in this situation there is going to be a loser. It may be difficult but you must close the process with a heartfelt round of thank yous, especially to the company whose offer you are declining. This is imperative to come across well, as you never know further down the line you might want to work for you company. Make sure you do it directly. Then you can go off to your great new opportunity knowing you’ve handled the situation professionally and you’ve not burnt any bridges.
