The last few months I have found myself in a great position of having alot of new candidates looking for new legal roles.
There are always busy and quieter times in recruitment, and there are always candidates looking for a change, promotion, or relocation forces them to make a move.
With this in mind there are plenty of Pros and cons for legal professionals to consider when weighing up a career change, and it’s important to remember that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
Sometimes when you are just not happy you need to make a decision to leave, as we spend such a large part of our lives at work, you have to do what is right for you. If it’s making you ill it’s time to go, if you dread the thought of Monday mornings, it’s time to leave.
There are some useful things to think about before handing in your notice: Are you just looking for a salary rise, if your boss offered you more money would you still go?
I believe the answer should always be yes in this case, as you weren’t happy before and more money wouldn’t change that. If it’s purely money speak to your boss, explain the reasons why you feel you deserve to be on a higher amount,” Never use the I’m leaving card just to get a pay rise”
What do you want to get out of a new firm? Make a list of requirements that are important to you.
Will this move affect my career? If you are hoping to take a more senior role within the firm you are at, you must remember that leaving could possibly put your promotion plans on hold, as a new firm would want to see how you develop before a promotion is offered.
Never leave on a bad note if at all possible. You never know where your career path will take you, and you can guarantee that once you hand in your notice other firms will know all about it, as Legal work can be relatively insular. Don’t do anything that could jeopardise your future plans.
