As the weather changes it can have a huge effect on mental health which has been publicised over many years as we move from Autumn to Winter. But how does it affect us as we move into Spring and what can we do to maximise the slightly longer days?

Winter can be difficult for people with mental health problems, the cold dark weather can exacerbate depression and anxiety, but as the days get longer with Spring approaching, I read an interesting article recently about ways to enhance the changes in weather to improve one’s wellbeing.

The obvious way is to spend more time outside. Vitamin D is a great way to improve your mood and health. A piece of research which was recently done suggested that a mere 15 minutes outside in the sun can affect your mood massively. Here at the Eventus Recruitment Group we hugely encourage a walk, gym or other lunchtime activities. The productivity is raised so much more in the afternoon, and the team look and are noticeably lifted. It’s much preferable than the “sandwich at the desk” culture.

Another point is to stake stock of your internal environment, i.e. the well-known notion of “spring cleaning.” De-cluttering your home and work life is an excellent way to declutter your mind. I am showing my age by saying how excited I am that a skip is being delivered this weekend for me to do just this. There are local recycling facilities, or you could donate to charity shops or try online selling.

Journaling is an idea that I hadn’t thought of but may do so. A new season is a great time to think about plans and aims to achieve before Summer starts. I think I am going to categorise mine as:

• Well-being

• House

• Garden

• Work

• Fitness

Or maybe I should re-prioritise the above having put the fitness last.

On fitness, Spring is a great time to begin and ham up the fitness regime. Doing a circuit outdoors surrounded by daffodils and crocus is so much better and enticing than forcing yourself to go to the gym after a long day at work in the dark.

So here’s to Spring, here’s to a lighter mind and body and here’s to lambs jumping in the fields…
