Flexible Working In Recruitment
By Nikki Phillips, Legal Recruitment Consultant for Lancashire, Cumbria and Manchester
Flexibility in the workplace is definitely on the rise and is now more of an expectation with terms such as “agile working” and “remote” appearing in job adverts across many sectors since the start of the pandemic.
Here at Eventus Recruitment Group we have always had remote and agile working. It is something that works for us as employees but also supports us in our line of work. Flexibility works both ways and I think that’s what works for us here.
I am a single mother of one pre-teen boy. As such, sometimes there are appointments and school functions that I need to attend and I know I have the flexibility in my role to do so. I also work slightly different hours to most of my colleagues, starting at 8.30am (once I have ushered the boy out of the door to the bus stop) and finish at 4.30pm so that I am home for him when he arrives back from school. This works well for us and my clients and candidates know that they can speak to me on my mobile when I am not in the office.
When it comes to legal recruitment it really isn’t the 9-5 grind. Quite often it is difficult to speak to candidates during working hours. With court hearings and client meetings many of my candidates prefer to speak to me before or after work, when they can have a more open conversation and aren’t in a hurry for their next meeting. I love the fact that my job isn’t the general 9-5. If I have been on the phone until 7pm of an evening I know I have some extra time to myself later in the week… either starting later, finishing earlier or taking a longer lunch.
I also have the flexibility to work remotely when I need to. We have the necessary technology to enable us to do so, with some of our team working from home permanently, it really isn’t a big deal. Personally, I like to be in the office with the team but from time to time I take advantage of the remote working when I need to.
We’re finding more and more that candidates are seeking more flexibility in the work place. Also many law firms are more open to flexible and remote working, having seen the productivity of employees who have been working from home or managing their time differently due to the pandemic.
As they say every cloud has a silver lining!
